Surviving the Interview

Well MyBFF’s, I am proud to announce that I have been chosen as one of the finalists of this year’s Miss Spring Show. This include 2 months training and charity work and I have to admit I am quite excited and a bit nervous about it. Needless to say, the first step was to survive not one, but two interviews! Now I know that we all get a bit terrified when we hear that word, whether it comes to beauty pageants or doing application for a job. Therefore I would like to provide you with tips on how to survive an interview, whether it is your first or your 50th. Take note…

Before the Interview

It is important to research the company you have the interview with. Find out what they are all about, what do they stand for and what they are looking for. When you did a background check, you will be confident in answering the questions, as you will know exactly what they are looking for. When you have a job interview, learn the product. The interviewer WILL ask you questions about their brands and products. Be prepared and ready for anything.

A closet full of clothes, but what to wear?

The way you dress is the most important thing about your interview, as it is the first impression you make and honey they do count! Your clothing can say more about you than you think and people will sum you up in terms of it. Firstly, determine what type of interview it is and then dress accordingly. When you have a modelling or beauty pageant interview, wear something that compliments your body (that however does not mean slutty) and you can use colour. For a sales job in retailing wear something smart casual. Put your personality into it but don’t overdo it either. Again, dress to what the company is looking for. A more formal job however, will require you to wear a suit. Just remember BFF’s, as Miss Kimora Lee Simmons say: less skin = more power!

Makeup must always be done in a natural way and minimize accessories in order to avoid being distracting.

The interview

  1. Before entering the room, take a deep breath and believe in yourself.
  2. When entering, it is important to walk with great posture and greet everyone with a handshake, if the situation allows it, as it shows confidence.
  3. Listen carefully to the interviewer(s) questions and wait for them to finish.
  4. When answering, talk slowly and clearly.
  5. Provide them with honest answers and not with what you think they want to hear. People can tell when you have rehearsed answers and they don’t like that.
  6. Always change your negative characteristics into positives. For instance, when they ask you what you consider as one of your bad qualities, answer something like this: I always want to be in control of situations and tend to take the lead on everything, but this can also be good as we need people who can lead others in difficult situations and help them to achieve their goals.
  7. When leaving, thank the interviewer for their time and smile.
  8. Just remember that in everything you do, confidence is key, and if you don’t have confidence? Well, then you better fake it ’till you make it!

Relationship tips

We all know that men and relationships can be difficult. The saying: Women are from Venus and Men are from Mars, is not far from the truth! As girls we want to give love and spoil our boyfriends rotten. But when does it become too much? Another problem is actually getting your crush to like you back. It is a science of its own and we, no matter how hard we try, are no professor or scientist in this particular field.

Luckily I bought the book Fabulosity by Kimora Lee Simmons. This MyBFF’s, is a book worth reading, giving you tips for just about everything in life and inspiring you to be the best version of yourself. It is in this book where I learned a lot of tips and rules for relationships. I made a summary for you that will hopefully help you in your relationship life.

Kimora Lee Simmons tips for romance [2006: 194-208]:

  1. It’s up to us to demand the best and show men the way we deserve  to be treated. (And I think we sometimes fail ourselves in that respect).
  2. “Never play games, tell him how you feel, be vulnerable and show your heart” – it’s so bogus! It drives me nuts because it’s just going to get a girl in trouble! A certain amount of thought and strategy has to go into romance because our whole aim here is to maintain dignity and be a little harder to win.
  3. Date for pleasure. Do it because it makes you laugh and you have a good time.
  4. Don’t be over-available. When a guy is calling you on Friday to go on vacation on Saturday, it means you were not the first one on his list. Say no! And eventually don’t you know those Friday night phone calls turned into Wednesday night phone calls and eventually Monday phone calls…
  5. I’ve always felt like women are worth so much, and we are so valuable and a lot of men don’t get it. And it’s up to each woman to show a man exactly how valuable we are.
  6. Ignore his craziness. We as women analyze every little thing that comes out of men’s mouths, but sometimes you’ve got to just pay their craziness no heed.
  7. Men are intimidated by power but also attracted to it. They can’t take beauty and brains, so they act totally nuts, like little kids who can’t make up their minds. So give them an unneedy woman, and they don’t know what to do! BUT they can be taught!
  8. Set yourself apart. Make conscious decisions to behave differently from other woman. It’s about doing little things that make yourself individual and special.
  9. Be prepared to walk away. I was always willing to walk away. Not because I didn’t love him, but I knew what I wanted and was evaluating whether it was the right fit.
  10. Put yourself first. Don’t be the woman who needs that man; want him, work for him, love his corny sense of humor…but you know you’ll survive just fine without him, too.
  11. Don’t expect fairy tales. (aren’t we all guilty of this one?).
  12. Believe your cheat-meter. [Don’t be this girl] Their man is fooling around on them, and they probably know it inside but refuse to see it.
  13. Be clear about what you will and will not stand for.
  14. Communication is key to everything. Pick your battles and let some things go, but if something’s bothering you, you should speak up about it or you’ll blow like a pressure cooker.
  15. It’s not true that you have to find the person who wants to do every little thing with you. More important is to have great communication, talk to one another, maintain honesty, and laugh a lot. That’s what keeps the glue tight. Do you have fun together, or not.

Use these guidelines and see the improvement happen. We need to be a bit sneaky in life. Guys are difficult to understand, but with these tips we might beat them at their own game.

I leave you with the words of Mary J. Blige: “You might be having a bad day, and he might be having a bad day. But who will put on a smile so that the other person can have a good day?”.

Trend alert!

I’ve been busy this week seeing what all of you are up to when it comes to trends. Scouting the mall for my fabulous BFF’s I have found that you are rocking one of the hottest trends for this season. Famous designer Tommy Hilfiger used this trend in his Fall/Winter 2012 collection. You guessed it…The riding boot! So if you want to be “so hot right now”, visit stores like Rage who has various styles in this trend at affordable prices.

Here is the styles you preferred this week:

Matric Farewell/Prom Make-up

Now that you have the perfect hairstyle to match your dress, it is time to complete the look with makeup. It is important to remember that your makeup look does not have to be the same style as your hair. A beautiful bun will look breathtaking with a smokey, sexy eye. Your makeup only has to match your dress and the overall look you are going for the night.

I’ve uploaded pictures of the different styles that might fit you. Just remember that everyone is different and you can adjust the look to your preference, for instance match it up with a different lip colour. Hope this will help you to make up your mind…

Song of the week

One of the sad and harsh realities we’ve discussed this week is how many girls are being abused in relationships. Unfortunately, they and even we don’t always realize it. The thing is MyBFF’s, abuse is not just about men hitting women. There are different forms and each one can be as life threatening as the next.

The one that most commonly occur  in young women’s lives are being insulted. I’ve had a few friends who’s boyfriends’ love to say mean things to them and insult them in a fight. Their boyfriends constantly tried to tear down their confidence so that they would think they don’t deserve better. Everyday I see more and more girls going through this just to keep their boyfriends happy.

If you feel guilty or even wonder about your relationship while you were reading this, the odds are that you’re in one of these relationships yourself. Well, MyBFF I am here to tell you that you deserve better! Believe me. You are a women with a heart full of love to give and girl you deserve exactly that and more in return. A man is suppose to keep you save and always make you feel secure. He is suppose to love you, care for you and brag about you at least once a day. And this man I’m talking about? He does exist! But you are not going to find him while being in a hurtful relationship.

The most important thing to realize is that your boyfriend will never change. Otherwise he would have already! It doesn’t make him a bad person, it just means you are not good for each other.  [If you are being abused in a bad way, call the Stop gender violence hotline on 0800-150-150 for help and guidance].

Therefore, my song of the week is “Face Down” by The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. I am dedicating these words to every girl out there who ever got hurt by a man and didn’t feel that she was worth the value she really is.

Face Down lyrics [Credit: elyrics.net]

Hey girl, you know, you drive me crazy
One look puts the rhythm in my hand
Still I’ll never understand why you hang around
I see what’s goin’ down

Cover up with make up in the mirror
Tell yourself it’s never gonna happen again
You cry alone and then he swears he loves you

Do you feel like a man, when you push her around?
Do you feel better now as she falls to the ground?
Well, I’ll tell you my friend, one day this world’s going to end
As your lies crumble down, a new life she has found

A pebble in the water makes a ripple effect
Every action in this world will bear a consequence
If you wade around forever you will surely drown
I see what’s going down

I see the way you go and say you’re right again
Say you’re right again, heed my lecture

Do you feel like a man, when you push her around?
Do you feel better now as she falls to the ground?
Well, I’ll tell you my friend, one day this world’s going to end
As your lies crumble down, a new life she has found

Face down in the dirt she said, This doesn’t hurt…
She said, I finally had enough!
Face down in the dirt she said, This doesn’t hurt?
She said, I finally had enough!

One day she will tell you that she has had enough
It’s coming round again

Do you feel like a man, when you push her around?
Do you feel better now as she falls to the ground?
Well, I’ll tell you my friend, one day this world’s going to end
As your lies crumble down, a new life she has found

Do you feel like a man, when you push her around?
Do you feel better now as she falls to the ground?
Well, I’ll tell you my friend, one day this world’s going to end
As your lies crumble down, a new life she has found

Face down in the dirt she says, This doesn’t hurt?
She says, I finally had enough!!!

Your Heels keep it real

We can easily be misled by the way people act or talk, but your heels won’t lie. They can say more about your true character than you think. Your personality shines through them and they tell the truth about your character. Choose your favourite heels and discover what they say about you:

Studded heel

If this heel draws your attention, you are a person that knows exactly what you want. You are not afraid to be different or to stand out. You are strong from the outside but deep inside of you is a huge heart filled with all the people you love. Your loyalty is one of your best qualities.

Sparkly heel

You’re sexy and you know it! If this heel attracts you, you are the kind of girl with confidence and you’re fabulous. You love to dress fashionably and sexy. Boys are attracted to you because you challenge them and girls that are not your friends might be intimidated by you. You always stand out in a crowd and can’t care less about what other people say about you…I mean, you look great! So why would their opinion matter anyway?

Classic heel

Elegant is the perfect word to describe you. You are a classy lady and most likely wear soft colours all year round. You have the best manners and always behave as a lady. A heart of gold is your best quality. Men have a lot of respect for you and girls feel honoured to be your friend…

Floral heel

You are a girly girl and love the colour pink. You wear mostly soft fabric clothing and “pinkish” colours. A sweet personality is one of your best known characters and you generally act coy around boys. Like this heel, you come across as soft and romantic with a heart full of love.

High Fashion heel

You are an absolute fashion diva! When a new trend arrives, you have it, wear it and own it. You love to dress up and perform. Peoples’ opinion mean nothing to you and you are not afraid to be who you are. Taking risks are part of your everyday life and you care about everyone. Friends love your energy and fun vibe. You truly are a fashion trendsetter…

Casual heel

You are a happy-go-lucky type of person who loves sport and chilling with friends. When it comes to fashion, you keep it basic. This however, does not make you less attractive. Boys find your natural beauty appealing and sexy. You have a competitive side when it comes to sports and just about everything else. People enjoy hanging out with you because you are fun and adventurous. No challenge or fear can be big enough to scare you off…
