Rainbow of the season

Winter started with a sudden bang and you, MyBFF’s, didn’t wait to change the rainbow in your closets. Roaming through the malls with the mission to change my own rainbow cupboard, these are the colour trends that I spotted by the help of your street fashions:

Dramatic Maroon

Dark Maroon is taking over the whole fashion scene, being used for everything from skirts to tops and even expensive coats.

Punk Black

Black is one of the main colours this season, mostly paired up with leather, taking inspiration from punk fashion. Add studs to any black ensemble and you will be considered as one of the fashion forwards.

Royal Navy Blue

Navy blue is also fighting for centre stage, but different from the other 2 colours, it is incorporated in sophisticated dresses and coats, giving off a sense of royalty.

Song of the week

I randomly came across this song as I was browsing through YouTube and I couldn’t believe that I have never heard it before, being one of the biggest Taylor Swift fans. This song brought tears to my eyes as I could relate to the song (as any other girl would). It describes that relationship or feeling where you believe that you are finally living a fairytale, just for someone to shake you back to reality, telling you that Prince Charming is actually a frog. And you, ofcourse, is the last one to find out…

So here it is MyBFF’s, genius, as always:

White Horse by Taylor Swift (lyrics from elyrics.net)

Say you’re sorry
That face of an angel comes out just when you need it to
As I paced back and forth all this time
‘Cause I honestly believed in you

Holding on, the days drag on
Stupid girl, I should have known
I should have known

That I’m not a princess, this ain’t a fairytale
I’m not the one you’ll sweep off her feet
Lead her up the stairwell

This ain’t Hollywood, this is a small town
I was a dreamer before you went and let me down
Now it’s too late for you and your white horse to come around

Baby I was naive
Got lost in your eyes and never really had a chance
My mistake, I didn’t know that to be in love
You had to fight to have the upper hand

I had so many dreams about you and me
Happy endings, now I know

That I’m not a princess, this ain’t a fairytale
I’m not the one you’ll sweep off her feet
Lead her up the stairwell

This ain’t Hollywood, this is a small town
I was a dreamer before you went and let me down
Now it’s too late for you and your white horse to come around

And there you are on your knees
Begging for forgiveness, begging for me
Just like I always wanted, but I’m so sorry

‘Cause I’m not your princess, this ain’t a fairytale
I’m gonna find someone someday who might actually treat me well
This is a big world, that was a small town
There in my rearview mirror disappearing now

And it’s too late for you and your white horse
Now it’s too late for you and your white horse to catch me now

Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa
Try and catch me now
Oh, it’s too late to catch me now…

Gavin Rajah Catwalk Report A/W 2013

Gavin Rajah already created a buzz before his show by giving the audience a preview of what to expect. A model posed on a large bedazzled army truck outside of the venue while a photographer shot all the action. Everyone scrambled around this set-up, full of curiosity and they had reason. This ensemble was a true show stopper and only a glimpse of what is yet to come.

Entering the venue you could find wired gates at the start of the ramp. The lights dimmed and a mission was projected on the white wall. As this wall opened, an army of models stood ready for their turn on the ramp. The first few outfits had a military feel to them, whether it was through print or structured blazers and sharp shoulders.

Next to come was the more elegant evening dresses being black and white. Some could say that this is a battle between evil and good. The dresses were sleek, soft and some areas sheer. It was finished off with sparkly embroidery.

Two camouflage evening dresses were thrown in between these dresses and made this show more edgy. Both styled in a more high fashion way.

As all the models made their way off the ramp only one remained. The music changed to a more softer sound and a model wearing a soft white wedding ball gown strolled down the runway leaving everyone breathless.

Suzaan Heyns Catwalk Report A/W 2013

The first thing that catches your eye as walking into the venue for the Suzaan Heyns A/W 2013 Joburg Fashion Week show, is the corridors spread all over the ramp. This contributing to the A/W 2013 collection of Suzaan Heyns called Doors of Perception.

For the A/W 2013 collection, Suzaan drew inspiration from doors and labyrinth alleyways. Throughout the styling of the models however, you can sense a look and feel from the Arabic culture as the models’ hair were draped around their faces and necks as scarfs.

A special soundtrack was also created for this show in particular, by Audio Militia and you found the models being guided through a “seemingly ever-deepening maze filled with mystery and the unknown”, as described on the flyer.

For the collection itself, light and filthy pantones were used to design this collection. Colours like washed out hues of Regatta blue, Beeswax yellow, Peony and Russet, Peapod green, Milk White and Browns were the main focus in most garments. The style of the collection was mostly male inspired as there were a lot of suits and blazers evident on the runway. Most outfits had a formal work clothing atmosphere as high waisted skirts with tucked-in shirts also featured in this collection.

Unfortunately, the show itself never wound up to a “wow factor” garment and there were no surprises nor drama in the collection. This made it a bit disappointing to watch and left the audience without awe, making this collection forgettable.

Love isn’t blind, we are

They say love is seeing an imperfect person perfectly. This saying has been romanticised and written as Facebook statuses by numerous girls in love right around the world. The only problem I realised with this saying is a trend emerging rapidly, one that is not doing any woman out there any good.

You see most of my friends, including myself, had or are at the moment living through this saying to the extreme. I am talking about those girls in a relationship with a guy that literally does every single thing wrong while she is just sitting there complaining about it, but staying with him through all these things.

They say love is blind and I have experienced this in my previous relationship. I too was in a relationship where the guy didn’t treat me the way a guy should treat a lady. And I actually knew the things he did and said was unfair to myself and my well-being, but I just didn’t want to admit it. You see MyBFF’s, I think that the problem isn’t that love is blind, but that we as women are the one’s closing our eyes to the truth.

We allow men to treat us unfairly and without respect. We are the one’s that are chasing men and doing everything in our power to make things work with the wrong person. And what is the wrong person you might ask? Any guy that:

  • Changes every disagreement into a huge fight.
  • Blames everything on you, including the things that he is doing wrong.
  • Always puts his friends’ and especially his girl friends’ above you.
  • Never stands up for you and allows people to disrespect you.
  • Talks mean or bad to you or about you, like saying you are stupid for saying something or like calling you names because of the things you like.
  • Forces you to change into someone you are not.
  • Takes you away from your friends and your family.
  • Tells you what to wear, what to do, how to act etc.
  • Makes you feel insecure.
  • Disrespects you.
  • And the list goes on…

The point is, most of us have dated this guy or are still dating him. And something I don’t understand is why? Why do we hang on for so long and why do we keep thinking this person will change? Because the truth is, he won’t. He will never change and it is not because he is a bad person, it is because you are not good for each other. And I think the person to blame for a guy treating us this way, unfortunately, is no else than us. And this is the harsh reality.

We, as women, stopped being ladies. We stopped being “Cinderella’s” waiting for our prince and instead took over his job for him. Why would any guy respect you if you make it so easy for him. Now I am not talking about playing hard to get, I am talking about setting your standards high, knowing exactly what you want and not giving in until you find it. We are giving in too easily, going for the “next good thing” because the best thing is taking too long. Don’t you know that the best things in life are worth waiting for?

And here is another thing: STOP believing that you are not good enough. Just stop! Because I promise you, you are. You are worth loving, you are worth caring for and you are worth fighting for and I can promise you the right guy will know this.

It is time that we stop making as if every man out there is God’s gift to women and start finding the real men out there who aren’t afraid of caring for you and showing it. Who are not afraid of fighting for you and supporting you in everything you do. And this will only happen when you start demanding the best for yourself. So the next time a guy takes you out, make him fetch you at your door, greet your parents (if you still live with them), open the car door for you (and honey you don’t get into that car until he does) and take you home before a certain time. Make him work for your heart. A guy loves a challenge and the reason why they have wandering eyes these days is because we are boring them out giving them everything on a silver platter.

It is time we start respecting ourselves enough to let the frogs go and wait for our Prince Charming’s to come and save us. Know what you deserve (the best) and wait for it. And believe me, he will come when you least expect it. And he might be someone you never would’ve thought could steal your heart. It is time to open your eyes MyBFF’s…and who knows…maybe you will finally see what’s been standing right in front of you…

God's promise
